Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray were the two greatest viol players in the greatest moment and place for the instrument: the court of the Sun King. But according to Hubert Le Blanc (1740) they played in two diametrically opposed styles: the sweet and traditional Marais, “as an angel”; the terrible Forqueray, “as the devil”. Javier Núñez will play their music and Couperin’s in the original Benoist Stehlin (or Stelle) built in 1767 that is in the MIM since 1998: a five octaves instrument with the typical characteristics of a mid-18th century French harpsichord. Fahmi Alqhai will play a 2003 copy by Carlo Chiesa from a viola da gamba by A. & G. Amati, Cremona, beginning 17 century, now in Russian state collections.
