Since Accademia del Piacere and Fahmi Alqhai are based in Seville, in this programme we highlight one of the greatest exponents of Sevillian and Spanish Renaissance music, Fancisco Guerrero.

As preludes to the vocal works by Guerrero, the central composer of this programme, we will listen to pieces from his closest musical environment. Among them, tientos by the organist Peraza, Guerrero’s companion at Seville Cathedral, and by Correa de Arauxo, perhaps a pupil of Peraza’s and titular organist of the nearby church of El Salvador. In addition, vihuela pieces by another of Guerrero’s colleagues at the Cathedral, Alonso Mudarra, and by Fuenllana, who published his Orphenica Lyra in Seville in 1554 and who reduced for his instrument works originally written by Guerrero for ensemble, in tablatures which are precisely the source of some of Guerrero’s youthful works mentioned above.
