THE SPIRIT OF GAMBO
Since its birth in the Spanish Renaissance, the viola da gamba became the perfect instrument for improvisation. Its hybrid nature, appropriate for the melodic deployment as for the harmonic accompaniment, allowed viola da gamba players to let their imagination fly, improvising new music or quoting other authors. Centuries later the romantic spirit brought the separation of the roles of author and performer, which banished the improvisation tradition of the so-called field of “cultured music” and relegated it to the world of popular music. With this concert program, the Alqhai brothers rediscover this improvisation tradition and, in brief, a more natural way of making music.
