HÍSPALIS SPLENDENS
MAGNA MÚSICA.
RELIGIOUS MUSIC in the 16th century Seville
After the discovery of America, Seville— owner of its monopoly of trade—be- came the most cosmopolitan city and cultural centre of southern Europe, a melting pot of merchants, adventurers, artists and intellectuals, at the forefront of scientific research and progress of ideas. Their newly built cathedral –of colossal dimensions–, became a front line musical centre, around which orbited an illustrious group of composers, singers and instrumentalists: Seville was a very important school of polyphony and instrumentalists, radiating from its cathedral (Morales, Mudarra, Guerrero, Lobo) to its noble capillas, frequented by composers such as Vasquez and Ceballos or theorists such as Bermudo. It is in this atmosphere of musical and intellectual excellence where we have to place the musicians of our program.
